Chennai Super Kings (CSK) continued their winning momentum with a remarkable seven-wicket victory against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 12th match of the TATA IPL 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium. The Super Kings’ victory was spearheaded by their spinners and a whirlwind knock of 61 runs off 27 balls by Ajinkya Rahane.
The CSK captain, MS Dhoni, won the toss and opted to bowl first. The decision proved to be successful as CSK spinners put on a remarkable display, limiting MI to a score of 157/8. Ravindra Jadeja was the standout bowler, taking three wickets for 20 runs in his spell.
Chasing the target, MI got off to a flyer as Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan went after the bowlers. Kishan’s dismissal for 33 runs off 19 balls changed the momentum, as Ravindra Jadeja took the crucial wicket. Suryakumar Yadav’s dismissal off Mitchell Santner’s delivery and Kieron Pollard’s quick departure meant that MI was struggling at 87/4.
Ajinkya Rahane, the game’s hero, came out all guns blazing, hitting a six off Jason Behrendorff in the fifth over, then taking on Arshad Khan in the fourth over, hitting him for four fours and a six. Rahane continued the momentum in the next over, hitting a six off Cameron Green. He reached his half-century off just 19 balls, the fastest in TATA IPL 2023 so far.
Piyush Chawla finally broke the 82-run partnership between Rahane and Ruturaj Gaikwad, dismissing Rahane at long-on for 61 runs off 27 balls. Ruturaj and Shivam Dube then carried the momentum, finishing the match with 11 balls to spare. Ruturaj remained unbeaten on 40 off 36 balls, while Ambati Rayudu remained not out on 20 off 16.
CSK made four changes to the side, with Dwayne Pretorius, Sisanda Magala, Tushar Deshpande, and Ajinkya Rahane replacing Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, and Rajvardhan Hangargekar. MI, on the other hand, made two changes with Jason Behrendorff and Tristan Stubbs replacing Jofra Archer and Nehal Wadhera.
In conclusion, CSK’s spinners and Ajinkya Rahane’s stunning knock proved to be the difference, giving CSK their second consecutive victory. With this win, CSK moved to the top of the points table, while MI languished in sixth place.
